EBAY / VR DEPARTMENT STORE
A VR department store that put 12,000 Myer products inside a headset and reached 780 million people.
Built to put eBay and Myer at the forefront of retail innovation.
Problem
Remind Australians that eBay and Myer are at the forefront of retail innovation, not just an old auction platform and a bricks and mortar retailer, and give them a glimpse of how shopping could work next.
Idea
The eBay VR Department Store, the world’s first virtual reality department store, where shoppers used “shopticals” and eBay Sight Search to browse, learn about and add thousands of Myer products to their cart using only their eyes.
How it worked
• Designed and built a VR department store connected directly to eBay’s API, so more than 12,000 Myer products, prices and stock levels updated in real time
• Distributed tens of thousands of “shopticals” – custom VR viewers – and a free app so people could shop the store from home using their phone and a simple headset
• Launched the experience through PR, social, broadcast and live demos to position eBay and Myer as leaders of the next wave of retail
Results
• 780 million plus media impressions
• 45 million dollars in earned media
• Tens of millions in subsequent retailer partnership deals
• Multiple innovation and effectiveness awards, and a global reference point for VR retail
