Problem
Use Virgin Australia’s sponsorship of Australian Tourism Exchange to make a memorable closing-night statement that showed the scale of its domestic network in a single experience.
Idea
Flight Paths, a 30-metre real-world flight map where arcs of light connected every major Australian destination and pulsed with a one-hour animation of real Virgin Australia flight data.
How it worked
• Built illuminated bases representing key Australian destinations and linked them with sweeping overhead LED arcs across a 30-metre event space
• Mapped 24 hours of real Virgin Australia flight data into a one-hour light animation, sending pulses of light from city to city in sync with actual routes
• Used sound design and pacing to turn the network into a choreographed showpiece for the event’s closing party
Results
• Created a dramatic physical visualization of the Virgin Australia network that became the focal point of the closing night
• Reinforced Virgin Australia’s role as a major connector of Australian destinations to media, trade and tourism partners
